Steve Carrell Reunites with The Office Creator for a Trump-Inspired Space Force Comedy

TV Shows

Whoa whoa whoa, slow down, Netflix. This is a lot to process. You’re telling me that The Office (U.S. version) creator Greg Daniels and star Steve Carell are reuniting to do a workplace comedy called Space Force inspired by President Donald Trump‘s proposed sixth branch of the military?

Netflix released an announcement for the show on Wednesday. The clip — soundtracked by the epic tones of “Thus Spake Zarathrusta,” the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey — introduces the show’s premise: “On June 18, 2018, the federal government announced the creation of a 6th major division of the United States Armed Forces. The goal of the new branch is ‘to defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks.’ Or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.”

Steve Carell Doesn’t Think The Office Would Work Today

The series is co-created by Carell and Daniels, two of the people responsible for what is still one of the most popular and valuable shows on Netflix, almost six years after it went off the air. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Space Force has been ordered straight-to-series, but an episode count has not been determined because no scripts have been written yet. Carell is expected to receive the most lucrative talent deal in TV history, even more than the $1 million per episode the cast of The Big Bang Theory was getting before their contracts were renegotiated, as he’s also getting co-creator and executive producer compensation. With the future of NBCUniversal-owned The Office on Netflix uncertain, Space Force is clearly Netflix’s play to stay in the Daniels/Carell business. It also seems like it would make a The Office revival with their involvement even less likely.

Since leaving The Office in 2013, Carell has focused on his movie career, mostly starring in dramas like The Big Short, Vice and Foxcatcher, for which he received an Oscar nomination for best actor. This will be his first series regular role since his Office exit. He will also be the male lead in Apple’s Reese Witherspoon-Jennifer Aniston morning show dramedy, but according to THR he has a one-year deal and will be credited as a “special guest star” on that upcoming series.

Daniels is also the showrunner of an Amazon sci-fi satire series called Upload that will go into production later this year.

With Carell and Daniels’ other commitments, it may be some time before we see Space Force. But it will almost certainly come into existence before the real Space Force.
